Weekend Breaks in scotland

The Trossachs, a land of shimmering lochs and craggy peaks, where the Highlands meet the Lowlands.

Weekend breaks in Scotland are possibly the most popular leisure travel product in the UK

Callander grew to prominence with the Oban Railway which is now disused and provides a cycle way and footpath providing one of the many amenities of this popular tourist destination. Set beneath steep wooded crags the town is flanked on the south side by the River Teith and from almost every point in the town Ben Ledi, the tallest mountain in The Trossachs, can be seen standing proudly at the entrance to the Leny Pass.

As a centre for walking at all levels of ability Callander is unsurpassed, offering many easy woodland, forest and loch side walks as well as a range of peaks within easy reach including a number of Munros. Many of these walks start at Callander, while others are only a short distance away and can be reached by bus or car.

The Meadows offer a pleasant riverside stroll and in the winter many visiting waterfowl may be seen. Keep your eyes open for feral mink, goldeneye, goosanders, dabchicks, cormorants, kingfishers and salmon. The 18 hole golf course offers many hours of relaxation, go sailing on a loch, canoeing in one of the many waterways, or take a stroll along one of the many nearby footpaths. Alternatively visit the Rob Roy Tourist Information Centre and see the audio visual story of Rob Roy and learn something of local history.

During the summer many open air activities and entertainments take place in the town square, many of them for children. In the event of inclement weather active visitors may care to use the facilities at the McLaren Leisure Centre. There are many interesting shops including outlets for the local woollen mills, and of course a wide selection of restaurants, tea rooms and pubs. Callander was the original location for the BBC TV series 'Dr. Finlay's Casebook'. Read on for details of things to see and do in and around Callander.
